CHAIKA Ukrainian Youth Orchestra Begins 5th Season

The Ukrainian Womens Organization Edmonton Branch invites young musicians to register with CHAIKA, a Ukrainian folk instrument, string, woodwind and brass youth orchestra beginning its 5th season. We are searching for energetic and enthusiastic youth who know how to read music and have 2 to 3 years experience and a respectable command of their instrument. We are able to accept a wide range of instrumentstsymbaly, sopilka, bayan, violin, viola, cello, double bass, mandolin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, keyboard, percussion will be accepted.

The CHAIKA Ukrainian youth orchestra plays arrangements of Ukrainian folk, popular and contemporary music. Musicians will receive their parts of the arrangements to become acquainted with the material and then would be called to participate in small sectional and/or full orchestra workshops/rehearsals. Rehearsals are usually held Saturdays 4:00PM to 6:00PM at the UNF Hall or as required to prepare for public appearances. Past performances include Taras Shevchenko concert, Caf頉vasiuk, Ukrainian Christmas Carol concert, Ukrainian Mosaic, Young Performers Showcase of Ukrainian Music.

The CHAIKA Ukrainian youth orchestra provides musicians with the opportunity to use their tremendous skills, to meet and work with other young musicians, to experience Ukrainian music and to contribute to various events.

COURSES PROPOSED

HIV/AIDS 101

This basic course is the prerequisie for the most courses. The course is intended to provide the gateway into the field of HIV/AIDS. The course will cover the following topics:

* HIV/AIDS

* Transmission ,prevention and treatment of HIV

* Harm reduction

* Working and living with infected individuals

* 3 hours training

HIV/AIDS and African women

African women are the more infected worldwide. The informal and formal polygamy in the African culture, expose women to a high risk of HIV-AIDS and other STD. Cultural beliefs are the first threat from preventing HIV-AIDS. The cultural sensitivity approach is needed in this course to ensure the interest and understanding from participants.

* Women attitude towards unfaithful partners and husbands

* How to take back your power

* Issues facing women

* Strategies for women to challenge culture and be protected

* How to negociate safe sex with your partner

* 3 hours training

HIV/AIDS and Women

It has been shown, however, that French-speaking Canadian women are more open, aggressive, and sexually liberated than other groups of women. This attitude sometimes leads to high-risk behavior in terms of complying and going along with their partners’ sexual practices. This course is intended to:

* education and awareness training for these liberated Francophone women interested in experimenting with new sexual practices

* training on the causes and effects of HIV/AIDS, in their personal lives and in their community.

* Identify root social causes of high-risk behavior in their families and communities

Length: 3 hours

HIV/AIDS and African men

The need to address the traditional high risk behavior of men sexuality. The cultural sensitivity approach is needed in this course to ensure good understanding from participants.

* The men roles and responsibilities to minimize the spread and the treat of HIV-AIDS

* Traditional beliefs as HIV-AIDS factors

* The consequences of HIV-AIDS in their daily life

* The benefit of changes

* 3 hours

Determinants of Health HIV/AIDS

The determinants of health are key factors and conditions known to influence population health . The goals of this course is to understand how various social, economic and physical factors work both separately and together affect collective health and well-being. We want to raise awareness on the determinants of HIV-AIDS and other STD. How to overcome the social and cultural barriers and adopt

* Healthy lifestyles

* Healthy choices of Sexuality

* Become more productive in the society

The HIV/AIDS determinants are:

* Status of women/gender

* Poverty and inequality

* Education

* Access to health care, particulary reproductive health care

* Human rights

* Social disruption and migration

* 3 hours
